When it comes to cravings, it never goes unnoticed to indulge in a delicious snack.

And here in Colombia, our cheese sticks or cheese fingers are no exception, for those special occasions when we want to indulge ourselves with the tastiest and most select of our roots and traditional flavors.

Are you already imagining some delicious baked or fried cheese sticks?

Finding our culture through a dish is possible. Live a unique experience that only Hojaldres Divali can achieve.

But today, more than a recipe, we bring you a story. A brief history to help us understand the origin of this tasty snack.

So let’s get started!

Cheese Sticks and their Origin

It is said that cheese sticks or cheese fingers originated in the Middle East and that it was customary to fry feta cheese (stuffing). Over time, in the 14th century, after arriving in France, the use of Italian cheese was incorporated into the recipe.

From there, its popularity spread to the point of crossing the European continent and reaching North America. It is in the U.S.A. where mozzarella cheese was added to its preparation.

And as for the name by which it is known here in Colombia, some say that it comes from Venezuelan creativity.

Although they were known there as “tequeños”, their origins are not entirely clear. There are 3 theories as to its origin:

  1. That of the Baez family in the Los Teques area.
  2. Origin of the Zulia area
  3. Caracas Origin

In the 1920’s, the eldest of the Baez sisters, Josefina Hernandez de Oviedo, from the city of Los Teques, gave out cheese rolls at a party, which at that time did not have a definite name.

These were a great success, and from the 60’s on they became known as Tequeños.

It is said, as an anecdote, that a general named Gómez, a fan of those delicious little rolls, when he saw one of the Baez or one of their managers, would say: “The tequeños are here!

In Zulia, it is said that they were created at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to the ingenuity of an Italian named Franco. Beyond the name and who created it, there is the detail of the area itself. It is a cattle-raising town, where cheese is an important part of its gastronomy and is mostly consumed fried.

In Caracas, the origin of this dish is more a comic anecdote than an important event.

It is said that once they caught a young man in the “El Teque” neighborhood, who was apparently conspiring, and after questioning him he denied everything, saying that he was “buying some cheese cakes in a bakery”.
